In this online master’s program, you will gain a full understanding of sport management techniques supported by a strong business background. Topics of discussion include sports research and analysis; governance and administration issues; sports law and conflict resolution; social, ethical and international sportsmanship; financial management techniques for sports organizations, and much more.

Course work for the online M.S. in Sport Management is comprised of 33 credit hours, offering you a solid array of core courses and a wide range of elective courses at both the tier 1 and tier 2 level—such as sports communication, sports analytics, sport facility and event management, current issues in sport management, and special topics in sports. You can further tailor your online master’s program by choosing the thesis or non-thesis track.

The online M.S. in Sport Management program offers graduate assistantships, athletic teaching assistantships, and internships with the only NCAA® Division II athletic program in Wisconsin. Admissions

For unconditional admission into the M.S. in Sport Management online program, you must hold a bachelor’s degree in sport management or business and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Applicants who do not have this background may be admitted following the admission requirements below.

M.S. in Sport Management online admission requirements (based on undergraduate GPA)

  • GPA of 2.75 and above – Students must submit a statement of purpose.
  • GPA below 2.75 – Students must submit three letters of recommendation if GPA score is under 2.75, as well as a statement of purpose highlighting compelling industry experience and relevant undergraduate course work. In addition to the statement of purpose, applicants may also submit a resume verifying work experience.
  • GMAT scores are not required for admission.

Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended, regardless if they appear on the degree awarding transcript or not, should be mailed directly from the institution(s) to UW-Parkside at this address:

Courses

The M.S. in Sport Management online curriculum is comprised of 33 credit hours, including 21 credit hours of core courses, six credit hours of tier 1 courses, and six credit hours of tier 2 courses.

You must take the following courses. Students can choose to take either HESM 701 or HESM 702. All other core courses are required.

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

Analyzes research in the sport management field to help solve issues within the sports industry. Introduces different methods for conducting and analyzing research. Examines how research articles are organized to assist in both reading and conducting research. Discusses practical applications of research.

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

Explores the managerial activities essential to amateur sports administration. Examines the structure and function of amateur sports organizations and how individual sport organizations fit into the greater sports industry. Focuses on high school and intercollegiate athletics.

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

Explores the managerial activities essential to governance and policy development in professional sports and reviews the structure and function of these organizations. Demonstrates where the power lies in an organization or industry segment and how individual sport organizations fit into the greater sports industry.

Examines sports law as it applies to sport managers by identifying liability of situations in the supervision, management, and conduct of sports. Introduces how to design and develop strategies for limiting liability including constitutional law, negligence, contract, and employment law.

Introduces student to various leadership theories and ethical considerations in sports. Examines what it is to be a leader and how to consider different ethical issues when leading a sport organization, including topics in human resources and effective management.

Introduces sociological concepts within sports. Examines society on a global scale and how the global society impacts sports. Focuses on current social issues within global sports.

Examines revenue generation and sales processes for sports organizations, including the various revenue streams available at all levels of sports through developing buyer proposals and learning contract negotiation processes for agreements. Includes case studies, projects, presentations, and hands-on negotiation exercise.

Studies budgeting and financial reporting for sports organizations. Explores methods of financing for both sports organizations and sports facilities. Includes case studies, projects, presentations, and hands-on negotiation exercises.

You must take two of the following tier 1 courses.

Examines how sports organizations interact with the media and fans/customers through various forms of electronic and social media. Activities include studying basic fundamentals and completing various exercises designed to give hands-on experiences in the areas of social media, media relations and public relations in the context of sports organizations.

Examines the design, collection, analysis, and use of data to measure performance and make decisions in competitive sports. Reviews basic concepts and skills needed to develop and apply analytical skills to sports from different perspectives: coaching, management, business, media, etc.

Studies planning, development and management of sports facilities and events. Includes topics in needs assessment, risk management, site selection, financial planning, operations, crowd control, event staffing, marketing, media, and sponsorships and participant prizes.

Select topics in sport management will be examined. Course may be repeated for credit provided different topics are offered.

A student either needs to take HESM 791 and HESM 792 together, or HESM 798 twice to get to the required 6 credits.

Provides knowledge of current and ongoing issues in the sport management industry. Discusses and analyzes current topics, preparing student to face these issues in the real world as a sport manager.

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 3

Develops professional skills through supervised work in the field of sport management. Applies learned knowledge and enhances experience and skills in a practical and relevant setting while completing a project with both faculty and site supervisors.

Duration: 7 weeks   |   Credit Hours: 1 to 6

Provides the culminating experience through the completion of a master's thesis in sport management by reviewing existing research and conducting original, independent research. Course may be repeated for credit.
